Nah-Mee Shin, PhD, NP, is a nurse scientist, board certified advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), and educator with a special focus on the care of those with chronic illness, particularly those with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and co-morbidities. Her initial practice in nursing was in medical-surgical care in the United States, and subsequently coronary care extending from in-hospital clinical settings to out-patient cardiac rehabilitation programs as she pursued her master’s and doctoral degrees concentrating on cardiovascular nursing at University of Virginia and University of Michigan. While she expanded her clinical experiences from acute and critical care to chronic and long term care, she specialized her expertise in cardiovascular health and related areas including metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, depression, etc. She exercised her clinical and research expertise at the tertiary hospitals or university health systems and in diverse communities. Dr. Shin's current research focuses on developing and testing comprehensive interventions to enhance self-management, using an individually tailored approach to women who are at risk for developing CVDs or have CVDs. She was Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI for several funded projects conducted in the United States and Korea. Prior research was conducted among hospitalized patients with coronary heart conditions to identify factors associated with successful recovery and rehabilitation of the cardiac chronic illness. She is currently Co-Principal Investigator with the Tailored Home Visiting Health Care Project of a government-funded intervention study for underserved and impoverished community populations using a problem-solving approach to hypertension and diabetes self-management. She has published over 30 abstracts, articles, and translated book chapters reporting research results and topics such as gender comparison, quality of life, Hwa-Byung, women and heart diseases, exercise and diet, rehabilitation, end-of- life care, substance abuse, domestic violence, etc. Dr. Shin is in charge of the clinical nurse specialist program at Korea University and guides a number of clinical studies aiming at evidence-based clinical practice.
